Wok a tasty treat for pupils

Children were given a Chinese treat recently as part of a new partnership between a food firm and local school.

St John the Baptist Primary School were last week visited by Bakkavor staff including London-based chef Yun Ko. She cooked noodles and veg for children who then tasted them using chop sticks.

There was also a sensory session involving different foods and children planting their own green sprouts.

St John’s has taken on the Farm to Fork syllabus and already grows its own food in its allotment and greenhouse while Bakkavor has committed to provide further kitchen equipment for the school.

Rachel Ogunlaja, Senior HR Business Partner at Bakkavor, said: “The work the school has done already is amazing and we want to ensure this can continue.

“We partner with many schools across the UK to inspire and educate young people on the food industry and where our food comes and it has been great to work with St John’s on this project.”

Paul Reid, head at St John’s said: “As well as this, our partnership with such an important food producer is helping our youngsters to gain experience of the wealth of opportunity that exists within the food industry in and around South Holland.

“Our hope is that some of our youngsters will remember their experiences here and that they may be inspired to be the future developers of food production and food technology in years to come.”
