Tributes are paid to ‘energetic and enthusiastic’ Phil

Tributes have been paid to South Holland stalwart Phil Scarlett who died on Tuesday.

Phil (65), of Sutton Bridge, had been fighting cancer for some time. He leaves wife Anne and daughter Natalie.

Over the years Phil had been involved with many businesses and organisations.

Most recently he was president of the Spalding and District Area Chamber of Commerce, non executive director at the Chamber of Commerce, governor at Boston College and chair of Pennygate Patient Link.

David Norton, Vice president of the Spalding & District Area Chamber of Commerce, said: “Whilst I have been aware for some time that Phil might not recover from his illness, it is still a shock and very sad news for all his friends and colleagues in Chamber.

“During his five year term as our Area Chamber President Phil had continually led the way on numerous projects directed towards helping to improve business performance in the area as well as encouraging activities directed towards enhancing the services and facilities around Spalding town for the benefit of the local community.

“I think we will all remember him for his energetic and enthusiastic presidential-like leadership on such things as the town’s Christmas Lights; the South Holland Business Awards; the funding for the Town Centre manager role; the persuasive meetings with the Council’s portfolio holders and the campaigning for improvements to the area’s road network.

“All of us at the Chamber offer our sincere condolences to his wife Anne and the other members of his family and also thank them for the support they gave to Phil whilst he was out and about carrying out his Chamber duties (which he did voluntarily).

“He will be sadly missed but given his many achievements I am sure he will not be forgotten”.

Jan Whitbourn, of Tulip Events Management, said: “Phil was always interested in promoting what he believed in and keeping his commitment, passion and his belief in the community.

“He always remained an inspiring mentor to many of us and he brought his experiences of commerce to everyone including us at Tulip Radio.

“I was so pleased that Phil was able to receive his Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday at the Pride of South Holland Awards afternoon. It was very kind of John Hayes MP to say such lovely words which we recorded for Phil to hear, before his passing.

“He will be sadly missed by many here in South Holland where he certainly touched many lives.”

John Hayes, MP for South Holland and the Deepings, added: “Phil brought to the Chamber of Commerce, his own broad business experience and wanted to put something back to the community through that work.

“That’s the mark of someone who is a giver and wanted to contribute and add to the place in which he lived.

“This characterises what he did and achieved.”
