Traineeships offer work to unemployed young people

Young people are being offered the chance to get valuable experience which could get help them get a job.

More than 830 young people aged between 16 and 18 in Lincolnshire are registered as NEET – not in education, employment or training.

But a new joint scheme between Fresh Meal Solutions and Lincolnshire County Council Young People’s Learning Provision (YPLP) could give some of those the chance to get onto the first rung of the ladder by taking up a traineeship.

The partnership is offering more than 20 traineeships, many of them based at the Freshcook food factory in Holbeach St Marks.

Traineeships provide an opportunity for 16-24 year olds who:

  • are not currently in a job and have little work experience
  • want to work
  • are qualified below Level 3 if they are 16-19 or have not yet achieved a full Level 2 if they are 19-24 to gain valuable work experience, increase their employability, English and maths skills and enhance their CV.

The traineeships on offer include a work experience placement with Fresh Meal Solutions and “on the job” work preparation and English and maths training provided by YPLP.

Those who are offered a traineeship can expect:

  • a friendly, supportive work experience placement
  • a personalised learning programme
  • access to the Bursary
  • support if things get tough
  • help finding and applying for the next step, such as further education, training or employment
  • support with transport

Those who complete the traineeship will be rewarded with a £100 voucher.

As a learner on a traineeship you will be fully supported by YPLP staff and would be expected to continue improving your English, maths and employability skills whilst on the programme.

Current positions available with a traineeship at Freshcook, Holbeach St Marks, are: production operatives, kitchen assistant, HR administrator, receptionist, QA auditor, production operative, planner, raw material controller, hygiene operative, trainer, kitchen assistant and sample maker.

You do not get paid by the employer but you are able to access a bursary and or still receive JSA or universal credit depending on your circumstances.

A spokesman for the programme said: “These programmes are designed to, at least, give you an opportunity to prove yourself to an employer, gain the experience that is so often needed when applying for work, hopefully receive a good reference and there is a possibility that the employer may take you at the end.”
