Top finish to season for Spalding Golf Club’s senior side at Surfleet

Spalding Golf Club’s seniors rounded off their season by beating Thorney Lakes 5.5-2.5 at the Surfleet course.

The winning pairs for Spalding were John Camm and John Woods (3&1), Jon Dorward and Alan Pritchard (2&1), Brian Freir and John Tilling (3&2), Ray Andrew and

Mike Browning (2&1) and Bernard Herbert and Dave Halftech (4&3). A half was achieved by Roger Davey and Paul Hooper-Roe, while the two losing pairs were Neil

Wilkinson and Ian Jones (2&1) and Neil Knighton and Albert Jacobs (1 down).

• The Captain versus Vice-Captain Challenge (East Midlands versus The Rest) took place recently in the form of the Ryder Cup.

The first six holes played as foursomes, the second six fourball/betterball and the last six as singles. The result was a resounded win for the captain and East Midlands.

• The last team event for the season was the seniors versus ladies match, which is always hotly contested.

Some 12 pairs on each side took part and this year the match took the form of a better-ball Stableford, with the accumulated scores deciding the winners.

In a close clash, the seniors won 377-362.

A good day was enjoyed by all, followed by the presentation of the trophy to the winning captain (John Camm) by the losing captain (Paula Brown).

• Ladies’ section: 31 ladies entered into a Stableford competition that was held over 15 holes due to the bunker renewal project that is now underway at the Surfleet course.

The winner was Avril Norton with 31 points ahead of Sue Matthews (27pts, ocb) and third-placed Jennifer Pipe (27pts).
