Tigers stage their own DIY SOS

It was DIY kit rather than football kit for Holbeach United last Saturday as they attempted to renovate Carter’s Parks away changing rooms that have been damaged by fire.

Saturday’s scheduled game with Boston Town had to be cancelled as a result of the fire.

But rather than an extra training session, manager Danny Hussey, assistant Tim Cole, captain Spencer Tinkler and vice captain Jonathan Fairweather, several players and a number of volunteers took it upon themselves to get the room ready ahead of the professionals coming in.

At the time of going to press on Wednesday, this Saturday’s home ChromaSport United Counties League Premier Division fixture with Sleaford Town is due to go ahead with the teams using the changing rooms at University Academy Holbeach.

Manager Danny Hussey, said: “Quite a few of the lads came down to gut the changing rooms so the workmen can come in.

“There were a lot of brilliant volunteers and it was a good team effort in sorting out the mess, and getting the smoke damage off the walls.

“After Saturday we’re away for a couple of weeks anyway so hopefully it will be done by then.”

Holbeach play the UCL’s bottom two over Christmas with Saturday’s home game against the currently pointless Sleaford followed by the Friday night derby at the Sir Halley Stewart against Pinchbeck on December 27 (ko 7.45pm).

Sleaford have lost all 14 of their league games so far while the Knights are on their own run of 12 succesive losses in all competitions.

Despite his team fighting closer to the opposite end of the table, Hussey is expecting some tough fixtures.

“They certainly won’t be easy. Sleaford played really well at Deeping last weekend and Deeping struggled to break them down,” Hussey said of the match that finished 2-0 to Deeping. “Then obviously we have the local derby with Pinchbeck United who will be looking to get one over us.

“It’s going to be two hard games and they’re going to be battles.”

After he made a substitute appearence in Tuesday’s nights 2-1 Lincolnshire Senior Trophy win over Deeping, Michael Frew is set to be back for Holbeach.

Former Pinchbeck United youth Jack Withers has made the move to Holbeach from Spalding United and is set to feature.

Ryan Oliver is a doubt for the Tigers for Saturday due to illness.
