Tense time for Town in quest to claim title treble

Spalding Town face an anxious weekend to see whether their quest for a title treble turns into reality.

They are aiming to claim a South Lincs and Border League title double while also currently occupying pole position in the race for Rutland League Division Six honours.

The Saturday First XI saw their final match of the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division campaign washed out last weekend.

It leaves Town still holding a 29-point advantage over second-placed Sleaford 2nd whose match also fell to victim to the elements.

Sleaford do, however, still have two games remaining in which to overtake Town. They face Stamford on Saturday before finishing their season away at Woodhall 2nd on September 17.

While the first team’s destiny is out of their own hands, Spalding 2nd can clinch the Division One title with victory at Welby Cavaliers on Sunday.

After their match at Baston was abandoned last Saturday, Town 2nd remain six points clear at the top of the table while also being assured of a promotion spot.

And second team skipper Michael Kearns insists he will be keeping the faith with his regular players rather than bringing in any first-teamers for the crucial clash.

Kearns said: “It’s great to have so many players wanting to play and ready to support.

“But I’ll be sticking with last week’s team with the only changes being Brandon Andrews and Nohman Ahmad who are unavailable.

“Young spinner Jonny Manton and bowler Jules Wilson will come back in.

“It’s not easy leaving some players out, particularly as they have done so well and have much to offer.

“Players that have not been selected this week have committed to supporting their fellow team-mates on the day and hopefully will be joining in the celebrations.

“This just goes to show the good spirit that we have here at Spalding Cricket Club.”

Spalding’s Rutland League side currently hold a five-point advantage of the top of the Division Six table.

With their campaign already finished, they will be hoping second-placed Huntingdon slip up in their final match of the season on Sunday away at Newborough 2nd.

Third-placed Uffington 2nd can also overhaul Spalding if they gain maximum points from their finale with Orton Park 2nd.
