Table tennis round-up: The race for second heating up in Spalding and District League

The Division One title in Spalding and District Table Tennis League may already be decided, but there is quite a battle shaping up for second place – and the second tier title is far from decided, too.

In the top flight, Moulton SE had their chances stymied by champions South Holland in a continuation of a match from November.

With the scores level, Piotr Olstowska stepped up for his games. The first proved hard fought with both players coming from behind, but Olstowska clinched the point. The doubles also went Holland’s way in four, before the final singles sealed a 4-1 win.

Second placed Jokers faced Underdogs and took the first two games, but in the next two the Underdogs fought back to level. However, Guntars Briedes won the final game for his second point and the match.

Fourth placed JDM met Mine’s a Pint and won all five, dropping just one end in the process. They now leapfrog Moulton into third, one behind Jokers who they meet in their last match, though they do have another three points from an unconfirmed win.

At the foot of the division, Outsiders took a two-point lead against rivals Nets n Edges opening their gap in the table to three.

Only one match was completed in Division Two, which saw Hurricane Brothers win 4-1 against Assassins.

All but one game went beyond the three ends and Assassins Carlos Caneiro with two five-enders, winning one but losing out to George Wallis who completed a double.

TNC moved a further two clear of chasers Rusty Nails winning both games played in their match with Hit and Hope. They now stand four clear, but both teams have unplayed matches, TNC two and Nails three, and they also meet in the final scheduled match.

Mine’s a Pint completed their Guardian Cup match with Hit and Hope to lead 117-92, but the latter received a further 31 from the handicapper giving them the tie by six.

The Outsiders v TNC match also received its handicap of seven to TNC, so they go win 130-106.

The semi-finals are now set in the Roy Gibson competition, with Kelvin Preville (2) defeating Richard Matthews (20) to meet Jack Sawyer and George Wallis (21) beating Caneiro to play Reece Kerry.
