Table tennis round-up: Teen Tom is on form at regional and national level

With the Spalding and District Table Tennis League nearing its season end it is time for the Individual competitions.

Last week 19 members took part in either the Supremes, Veterans, Juniors or Junior Doubles playing 29 games.

The latter two events, with just four juniors involved, were naturally concluded.

The individual event was seeded and saw Tom Chesworth defeat Jack Sawyer, while Dylan Taylor won through against Tommy Maguire.

Chesworth, seeded one, justified his ranking in taking the title 11-5 11-4 11-4.

The victory came on the back of 13-year-old Tom from Weston Hills winning all 10 of his matches as his Corby Smash Team were crowned the winners of Division Two in the National Cadet League held in Wellingborough.

In the doubles the boys decided to split the pairings fairly and Sawyer and Taylor took the title by defeating Chesworth and Maguire 9-11 11-8 12-10 12-10.

Neither the Supremes or the Veterans classes were concluded, but this was unsurprising with three players seeded in both events.

The Supremes had 18 entries, requiring two preliminary matches, and all four seeded players reached their allotted places.

IN FORM: Spalding Table Tennis League’s Tom Chesworth (13).

There were 12 players taking part in the Veterans and again the top four reached the semi-finals.

Wes Roper (1) faced Guntars Briedes (3) in both events and had two hard fought matches reaching the Vets final with an 11-4 5-11 10-12 11-6 11-8 win.

They then had to turn about and do it all again for the Supremes, with Briedes proving just as difficult before going down 8-11 8-11 11-2 11-8 11-9.

In the other half of the draw John Gilbert was seeded two and first of all saw off Jean White (4) in the Vets 11-7 11-6 10-12.

Then in the Supremes he faced Chesworth (4) but lost out 11-7 11-3 9-11 11-9.

Unfortunately time defeated the organisers so the finals will have to be played on another date.

Members are reminded that the other events – Division One, Division Two, Ladies and Doubles – will be held on April 16 so need to organise their doubles partners if they wish to take part.

Anyone else wishing to try the sport can do so at the High School Sports Hall on a Tuesday evening from 7:30pm to 10pm at £4.
