The Voice of Spalding and South Holland
The battle for the Spalding and District Table Tennis League Division One title intensified last week with just three points now covering the top trio of teams.
Leaders Moulton SE faced Underdogs and suffered their second loss of the season.
All of the singles were over in regulation, with Andrew and Stephen Appleby winning one each for Moulton, while Kelvin Preville took two for the opposition. The doubles decided the match – and this went to Underdogs in five ends, leaving Moulton on top with 33.
South Holland met fellow chasers JDM, defeating them 4-1. The first two singles and the doubles went to Holland’s John Gilbert and Piotr Olstowska, but Tom Chesworth pulled one back in a close game with two deuces before Olstowska finished the match off.
They also completed a match with Jokers, which had stood level. Olstowska picked up another double, but Holland lost the doubles but won the match 3-2; points which leave Holland trailing by one with a match in hand.
Earlier, Jokers had a 5-0 win against Outsiders.
The remaining top-flight match saw Nets n Edges close the gap on Outsiders, but fall further behind Mine’s a Pint.
The Edgers and Pinters met across two tables with the opening singles shared in three ends. Mine’s a Pint went ahead with the doubles, before the reverse singles were played, again shared though this time both going to five.
In Division Two, TNC extended their lead with chasers Rusty Nails match being postponed. The leaders faced Team TJ and repeated their 5-0 victory from earlier in the season, though three went to the fourth end.
Third placed Hit and Hope had a close match with Assassins with only the doubles going in straight ends. Ping Wang and Tony Dorey took one each for the former while Carlos Caneiro scored a double for Assassins. All the singles went to at least four ends but the doubles decided the match in the Hitters favour.
Caneiro also took two in a rearranged match with Deeping Lads; the only games played.
TJ and the Lads resumed their Marylands round one match which was level, but TJ took the next singles and the doubles to go through
Underdogs and Moulton also played the doubles from their Moulton Shield semi, which saw the former take the lead.
