Table tennis round-up: A busy night of action in Spalding and District League

On a night scheduled for the Guardian Cup action, many of the Spalding and District Table Tennis League took the opportunity to do some catching up.

To take the cup first Assassins and Team TJ played the second game in their round two match which was won by Assassins’ Hannah Gilbert 33-23. That puts the score slightly in Assassins’ favour at 60-56 with two games to play.

Nets n Edges’ Reece Kerry also caught up on round two in their match with Rusty Nails. With the Edgers already trailing by 19, he pulled back ten of the deficit but then Nails received a further 21 handicap.

In the semi-final they faced TNC, their close rivals from the top of Division Two. A close match was predicted and proved, so with each team winning two of the games with TNC leading by seven. In the event, that was just enough as Rusty Nails received four, leaving them losers by 125-128.

Assassins and TJ then played their second game from their match started four weeks earlier with Gilbert levelling the scores at 1-1 with a win.

Kerry had a busy evening after the cup game he played John Gilbert of South Holland in a continuation of their league fixture which the latter in three ends following a first end scare. Holland now lead 4-0.

He then moved on to a Roy Gibson semi-final where he met George Wallis, 21 handicap to his 17. In a match which was about as tight as is possible, Kerry went through to the final 29-31, 31-29, 31-30.

Finally came the unfinished league match with Outsiders, which the latter led 2-0.

Kerry took the first before pairing up for the doubles which, as usual with these teams, was close. Edgers took the first 11-4, then lost the next two 8-11, 6-11, before coming back 15-13 11-6. With Kerry taking the last they completed a 3-2 victory.

The Edgers moved ahead of their rivals on head to head results.

Mine’s a Pint and Underdogs also played out a match unfinished from before Christmas.

The scores had been level but Andrew Hay won his first singles and then he and team mate Jeremy Hitcham took the doubles for the win, before Kelvin Preville won Underdogs’ second point.
