Abbeyview Surgery staff celebrate with their award.

Surgery’s award for cancer care

A Crowland GP surgery is one of two in the county recognised for its cancer care.

Abbeyview Surgery in Crowland and New Springwells Practice in Billingborough have both received a Lincolnshire Cancer Care Award for going above and beyond for patients affected by cancer.

Helen Herbert, Practice Manager of Abbeyview said they were extremely proud to receive the award for excellence in cancer care.

“Our dedicated team feel passionately about providing the best possible care to all those affected by cancer.

“We have improved access for our patients to cancer screening tests and offer Saturday walk-in smear clinics.

“We now have a dedicated staff member providing a smoking cessation service.

“We also offer a range of clinical and holistic support services for patients following a cancer diagnosis including a Carers Champion, Cancer Care Champion and Care Co-ordinator service.”

There are currently 27,500 people living with cancer in Lincolnshire with this figure set to rise to 45,500 by 2030.

The award is part of a series of initiatives between NHS Lincolnshire West Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Macmillan Cancer Support to transform the way in which support is given to people affected by cancer.

Louise Jeanes, Cancer Programme Manager at Lincolnshire West CCG said they wanted to recognise GP practices committed to delivering excellent ongoing care, with an exclusive award.

“GP practices enable patients to continue their care including support with symptoms and side effects following treatment, care planning, and signposting into offers of support in the community.”

“This includes providing a cancer care review designed to support the person affected by cancer to understand what information and support is available to them, enabling supported self-management.

“Patients have described to us how the end of treatment is not the end of cancer, and that many feel abandoned when returning to their local community.

“GP practices play a vital role in the ongoing support offered to patients and their families following a cancer diagnosis.”
