Stellar Scunthorpe show from Spalding cyclists

The long journey paid off for Spalding Cycling Club riders as they put in a fine showing at Scunthorpe Road Club’s round of the Lincs Cyclo Cross League at Broughton.

Ben Norton shone with a fine third place in the under-12 race, behind Christopher Hilbert of VC Lincoln and Max Poole of Bike Box Alan.

Also on fine form was Megan Kendall, who took the under-16 girls’ award in the youth race.

Molly Peel managed fifth place overall and first girl in the under-12 girls’ race, while Cameron Neilson was fourth overall and second under-14 in the youth race.

Spalding’s only other rider, Chris Peel rode well to finish as 26th Vet and in overall position of 84th.

  • Spalding ace Jake Norton, riding for Sherwood Pines SRAM RT team, finished the youth 14 boys’ race in sixth place overall at the National Trophy races at Southampton. He was 2.58mins behind winner Ben Tulett of local team Hargroves Cycles – Ridley RT.

 

  • It was business as usual for the Spalding members competing at the Hubbard’s Hill event organised by Arrow RT.

Fast becoming one of the most consistent cross riders in his age group, Bryn Richards completed the race just 36 seconds behind winner Christopher Hilbert of VC Lincoln and Max Poole of Bike Box Alan.

Ben Norton followed in close behind earning him sufficient points to just keep him in fourth overall in the Lincs under-12 championships, Richards is currently third. Ed Gurney made up the team with 16th place and is currently in 21st spot overall.

Molly Peel and Emily Richards, who have established a commanding lead with first and second places in the Lincs under-12 girls’ overall championships, rode their usual consistent races to finish sixth and ninth overall to again place as the top two girls.

Mimi Gurney, who did not race, lies 14th overall in the under-12 girls’ championships.

The youth race had second claim members Matt Ellis and Jake Norton in the top four, with Ellis winning and Norton finishing fourth to claim first under-14.

Finishing one lap down, Cameron Neilson crossed the line in ninth and was third under-14. He was chased in by Tilly Gurney, whose tenth overall made her third under-16 girl.

Will Gurney completed his race as fifth under-16 boy in 13th overall.

Jake Norton tops the under-14 championships, with Neilson in second and Tom Wright sixth. In the under-16 championships, no less than six Spalding riders appear in the overall standings. They are Matt Ellis (fourth), Will Gurney (seventh), Tilly Gurney (eighth and first under-16 girl), Thomas Webster (ninth), Megan Kendall (15th) and Sophie Wright (16th).

In the seniors’, vets’ and women’s race – which featured professionals Graham Briggs and Steve Lampier – Sam Bentley (47th) was first Spalding rider home. Gareth Richards continued his consistent season with seventh spot and 21st Vet, while Derek Chamberlain took second in the V60 category with his 73rd place. Gary Bentley made up the team finishing 93rd and 15th in V50 category.
