Spalding Town’s young guns flying high after impressive Peterborough victory

Spalding Town Cricket Club’s under-11s are hoping to emulate the table-topping senior side after earning a fine win against Peterborough Town under-11s on Friday night.

Playing at home, Spalding’s young guns were put into bat by their visitors having lost the toss. On a damp wicket with no real bounce, Town lost two wickets from the first two deliveries.

However, Will Moxon and Macey Andrews quickly got the measure of the wicket and put on a partnership of 24 runs.

The second pairing of Myron Baxter and Finn McCaurly faced a barrage of superb bowling from the opposition, but saw out their overs with dogged determination.

Next in were Ed Barnes and Harry Birch – and the formidable partnership took the game straight to Peterborough with Barnes hitting two sixes and three fours.

That, coupled with good running between the wicket, saw them put on an impressive 35 runs.

The last pairing of Ollie Dring and Jack Grundy kept up the momentum, with some dogged defence accompanied with some impressive shot making saw them put on 25 runs to take Town to 189-6.

Peterborough reached 166-6 in their reply, with McCaurly taking an impressive wicket and Moxon picking up a quick-fire double, as well as a super stumping from Baxter.

Dring and Barnes took further wickets to leave Town third in the table – and with the top two still to play.

  • Spalding Town’s under-15s were beaten by seven wickets by Grantham under-15s in the quarter finals of the Lincs ECB county cup last Thursday night.

Batting first at Grantham, Town managed a solid 120-6 from their 20 overs.

Talented teen Patrick Harrington led the charge with a fine unbeaten 51, which saw him have to retire not out.

Also making solid knocks were Jon Manton (13), William Barnes (11) and Ethan Lawrence (10).

Grantham’s wickets came from Ethan Milne (2-15), Oliver Barry (2-16), Harry Robinson (1-22) and Taylor Fell (1-14).

Grantham’s run chase was well constructed, with the top order getting the job done with five balls to spare.

Harrington (1-24) got rid of opener Jaden Fell for 10, while Jack Sawyer (1-9) had Milne caught by Manton for 17.

But Sebastian Newton (27) and Robinson (45 not out) did plenty of damage and got Grantham close to the finishing line before Brandon Andrews (1-17) dismissed Newton.

However, Taylor Fell (5 not out) joined Robinson and the pair steered Grantham to a decisive 121-3 in 19.1 overs.

  • Long Sutton under-13s were outgunned by a fine batting performance from Caythorpe Spitfires under-13s in a recent friendly clash.

Batting first, the Spitfires made an impressive 162-2 from their 20 overs – having been inserted into bat by Sutton.

Callum Harrison (31), Haydn Tear (33) and Tom Helliwell (30) all retired not out, while Zack Draycott’s 20 not out down the order was also key. Charlie Crisp (2-16) was the standout Sutton bowler.

Josh Baker impressed in Sutton’s reply, making an impressive 23-ball 36 in their 64-9 from 14.3 overs before being bowled by Zack Draycott (1-2).

Finlay Bembridge (11) was the only other Sutton batsman to make double figures, as they fell 98 runs shy of their target.
