Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s top talents seal spot in the national finals

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s impressive under-25 double triples team have secured their place in the national finals.

Played at the neutral venue of Scunthorpe, Spalding comfortably saw off rivals Scarborough comfortably by 15 shots to prevail 32-17.

Spalding stamped their authority on the quarter-final clash early on and were already 11 shots ahead at five ends.

Despite a slight comeback by Scarborough, where they got to within nine shots at ten ends, Spalding certainly finished the stronger and closed the game out well.

The significant damage was done on the rink skipped by Stephen Harris, with Rhys Hill and Chelsea Tomlin, who won 17-5.

However, the set skipped by Jordan Philpott, with Lauren Finbow and Ruby Hill, also enjoyed a 15-12 win.

Spalding will now play at the national finals at Nottingham Indoor Bowls Club. The semi-final – and hopefully the final – will both be played on Sunday, April 7.

  • Spalding IBC’s over-60s ladies continued their Mason campaign with a 34-25 third round victory against Stamford A on Friday.

The damage was done by Spalding’s home rink, skipped by Gloria Haney, with Judy Jackson, Sylvia Wade and Barbara Hurst, who won 19-10.

The away set skipped by Julie Hicks, with Freda Lyon, Maisie Belding and Betty Deaton, consolidated well to earn a hard fought 15-15 draw.

Next up for the ladies are Carlton on February 15.

  • Spalding’s over-60s team played their seventh game of the season away at Horncastle on Thursday.

Spalding won the reverse fixture in November 18-0 and 117-69 on aggregate, so we hoping for more of the same.

They started well, quickly mastering the faster carpet and by the half-way stage, were winning on three rinks but only nine shots ahead on aggregate.

Spalding played consistently well in the second half too and pulled away to win by 36 shots (104-68).

They won on four rinks, meaning the final points score was 16-2 to Spalding.

The captain thanked reserves Graham Wright and Dave Amess and welcomed Maurice Elding and Ken Challens back into the squad.

Best winning rink was skipped by Ron Walpole, with Tony Westland, John Fitchett and Ken Challens, while captains for the day were David Lunn and Graham Hicks.

  • The latest game for Spalding’s friendly team saw them play host to a team from Huntingdon Indoor Bowls Club. This was a rare visit from the team and is a follow-up from when the Spalding team played at Huntingdon last season.

As a rule, it is normally the home team that gains the initial advantage but this was not so in this game as Huntingdon went ahead on aggregate and on four of the six rinks.

However, the home team refused to give in and by the tenth end, had just managed to gain the lead, albeit only leading on two rinks.

Spalding continued to dig in and finally managed to close the game with an aggregate score win of 132-81 and winning on five of the six rinks.

Spalding had three top rinks, all winning by 18 shots but the rink with the best result was obtained by the team of Alan Garrett, Janet Staples and skip, Mick Jennings.

Huntingdon’s sole winning rink was skipped by a young lad of only 11-years-old, who played an exceptional game.
