Spalding Indoor Bowls Club ace Jordan Philpott was crowned champion of the Hartlepool Open on Friday.

The second round against Hayley Robinson (York) was far more comfortable as Philpott won in straight sets 7-3, 8-3.

An all-Lincolnshire clash in the last 16 awaited for Philpott as he faced Scunthorpe’s Paul Johnson.

The Scunthorpe man started the better and took the first set 7-0, before Philpott bounced back to take the second set 7-6 and force a tie break.

The Spalding youngster held his nerve to win the tie break 2-0 and book his place in the quarter-final.

A live draw saw Philpott pitted against Cumbria’s Kevin Harrison in the last eight, where he hit top form to only allow Harrison to score a single shot all game to win in straight sets 9-0, 8-1.

The semi-final was certainly a tense affair, which saw Philpott matched up against current British Isles singles champion Jack Bird (York).

Bird took the first set 8-5 before the Spalding star showed his fighting ability to take the second set 8-1. The match went the distance and Philpott actually found himself on the brink of defeat before taking the tie break 2-1.

In the final, Philpott faced off against home favourite Paul Hartley. Philpott continued his good form to win the final comfortably in straight sets (8-2, 9-2).

For his efforts, Philpott took home the £1,000 first prize and valuable ranking points towards the Race to Potters Grand Finals, which are due to take place on November 22 and 23.
