Spalding bowlers excel to bring home trio of trophies

Spalding Bowls Club lifted three trophies after shining at the EBF County Finals.

The club’s first title of the weekend was won by Jordan Philpott who claimed the Colin Smith Trophy (under 25 singles).

In the semi-final, Philpott comfortably beat Lee Johnson from St. Giles 21-7 before facing defending county champion, David Bristow of Helpringham in a high quality final.

COUNTY CHAMPIONS: Wayne Phoenix, Jordan Philpott and Adrian Field, with the Truman Cup.

The 21-year-old Philpott was up against it for much of the final but he showed his class and finished strongly to win 21-19 and secure the title for the first time.

Philpott also joined forces with club mates Wayne Phoenix and Adrian Field to win the Truman Cup (3 bowl triples).

In the semi-final, the trio overcame the highly rated David Cullum, Gareth Bland and Alan Dent Jnr from Cleethorpes including racing into a 15-0 lead before sealing a 24-14 win.

In the final, they faced Neil Poole, Glenn Boden and Phil Parker of Cemetery Road Bowls Club in Scunthorpe.

The Spalding Town trio found themselves in a winning position, going into the last end four ahead.

The end shaped up nicely before Parker made five shots and Philpott, with last bowl in hand, faced the match losing count.

Philpott held his nerve to play a perfect bowl of his own and his team won the final 17-12.

The last title to come back to the Spalding area was won by Paul Caress, Ash Caress and Martin Spencer of Royal Mail Cart Bowls Club as they won the Carholme Cup for two bowl triples.

In the semi-final, they faced Adie Smith, John Cross and Paul Roberts from Helpringham, who won the Truman Cup, only 12 months ago.

The father and son duo, Paul and Ash, who were teaming up with Spencer for the first time this season, found it tough going against an in form Roberts and found themselves 10-6 behind before playing the better bowls in the second half of the game to secure a place in the final, 20-12.

The Royal Mail Cart trio also played a team from Cemetery Road Bowls Club in the final, this time being Vic DeBoer, Chris Smith and Graham Teal.

On this occasion, Caress, Caress and Spencer showed their class to win the final comfortably by the same score as their semi-final, 20-12 and secure the title at their first attempt.

All of these Spalding bowlers will now represent Lincolnshire at the EBF national finals which are taking place in Skegness over the course of the week commencing August 19.
