Sewing up for the NHS

The mum of a radiographer has been inspired to set up a sewing group to create bags for NHS staff.

Jenny Gay, of Pinchbeck, wanted to do something to support her daughter who is among the frontline staff at Peterborough City Hospital.

She decided to create the bags that staff can immediately put the uniform they’ve been wearing on a shift into and then straight into the wash, reducing the risk of COVID-19 infection.

After an appeal on Facebook, a host of people came forward to help create the bags.

And so far between them they’ve created over 200 that are being used at Johnson, Pilgrim and Peterborough hospitals.

“I put out a plea on Facebook asking for fabric, ribbons, tape etc and for other people to help make the bags,” Jenny said. “We have had a great response with so many donations in the area, and I would like to thank them all.

“They are incredible.”

Jenny herself has been sewing since she was 15 before becoming a seamstress and currently runs her own online shop called Jen’s HomeMade Designs.

The requests for orders continue to come in with Norwich City Hospital also now requesting donations.

The bags need to be made of cotton (due to them having to be washed at 60 degrees) and they’re roughly 20 to 24 inches square.

The group have also been asked to make face masks and scrub hats.

Anyone wishing to help can contact Jenny by email on sewingjenny@hotmail.co.uk or by finding her on Facebook.
