Saturday football: Great point for Spalding United in opener, Holbeach United smash six

Spalding United kicked off their season with a fine 1-1 draw at Cleethorpes Town on Saturday, while Holbeach United redressed their poor early-season form with a super 6-0 win over Kirby Muxloe.

Starting with the Tulips, George Zuerner’s close-range finish on 32 minutes gave them a 1-0 half-time league in the all-Lincolnshire clash in Evo-Stik League East Division.

They held that advantage all the way up until the the 78th minute, when Brody Robertson hauled the hosts level and ensured the spoils were shared.

Spalding’s first home game of the campaign is against AFC Mansfield on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, Holbeach were in red-hot form in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division at Carter’s Park.

Having lost their first two games of the season, the Tigers made a stellar start and were 2-0 up inside five minutes against struggling Kirby Muxloe thanks to goals from Will Bird (2) and Jack Smith (5).

A second from Jack Smith made it 3-0 early in the second half, before Josh Ford (54) got in on the act to put the result beyond doubt.

There was still time for Bird to chip home a delightful fifth 20 minutes from time, while Kieran Hamilton jumped off the bench to score for the second week running (76) to round off the rout.
