Sangha’s half century helps Long Sutton CC Sunday stay top

Table toppers Long Sutton kept up their winning run as they won at home to Whittlesey CC in Rutland Cricket League Division Three East on Sunday.

Five wickets for Callum John and a fluent 55 from Rajan Sangha saw Sutton to a fine victory that keeps them in pole position in the table ahead of rivals Werrington.

After putting the visitors to Paradise Field in on winning the toss, John was straight on the attack having opener Peter Bibb caught by Jake Burton for a duck.

Simon Pollard (4), Ian Jones (10) and captain Matt Fisher (2) all fell to the rampant John in quick succession, two of them bowled and Jones trapped in front.

Opener Clive Evans (22) provided some resistance but he was bowled by Jake Burton.

The lower order provided more for their side than the top order starting with Charlie Peacock batting at six who scored an impressive 26 before being the first of two wickets for Paul Edgellar.

Number eight Simon Parks top scored for his side with a battling 30 not out but the tail struggled to stay with him for any length of time thanks to some excellent bowling by the home side.

Whittlesey were left 155 all out in the 40th over.

John finished with a brilliant 5-29 from his 12 overs, Jake Burton finished things off with 3-29 from 7.5 overs and Edgelier 2-20 from seven overs.

Sutton also lost early wickets in their reply but they were indebted to a speedy 55 from Rajan Sangha which put them on the front foot.

Opening batsman Jamie Taylor (4) and Luke Barnes (1) both fell early, both being bowled by Steven Palmer and Simon Pollard (1-25) respectively.

Edgelier (14) provided some help for Sangha, but he too fell to Palmer as did Josh Baker (0) shortly after.

Palmer finished with 3-41 from his 12 overs giving Whittlesey hope.

By that point Sutton were so far ahead of the required rate it allowed their middle order to ensure they reached the target.

William Naylor scored 27 before being caught behind off Clive Evans (1-14) and skipper Phillip Coote provided 22 vital runs before being lbw to Brett Wright (1-34).

There was still a bit of work to be done but Calvin Bird (16 not out) and Burton (9 not out) saw their side home without any further alarms to seal the win in the 34th over.

The result means Long Sutton remain top of Rutland Division Three East by four points and travel to third in the table Huntingdon for this weekend’s fixture.
