The former Red Cow Hotel, High Street, Donington

This rundown ex-hotel is next on council’s tidy-up hitlist

Time has run out for the owner of a Donington eyesore to tidy up the site.

After the success of tidying up the controversial Bull and Monkie site in Spalding, South Holland district councillors have selected The Red Cow Hotel as next on their hitlist.

At last Wednesday’s full council meeting, members were asked by leader Coun Gary Porter to decide which eyesore in South Holland is most pressing for action.
He said: “The reason we haven’t tried to prioritise the whole lot is because we need all of the owners of these sites to wonder whether they will be next and if we tell them who’ll be next, then they’ll have a bit of breathing space.”

The Red Cow Hotel, in High Street, has long been a headache to the council, with its increasing state of disrepair and certain parts presenting dangers to trespassers.
Contact with the owner has been problematic, but the meeting heard that there has been action on site recently.

Cabinet member Coun Malcolm Chandler proposed The Red Cow be tackled first as it was a “permanent thorn” in his side as far as Building Control was concerned. Coun Rodney Grocock supported that, adding: “The good people of Donington have had it pretty rough with that building for a long time and it would be super if the council could put that right.”

Coun David Wilkinson was backed by fellow Long Sutton member Coun Simon Booth when he proposed the former butcher’s shop in the town’s Bull Lane. He said it was letting down an area which had improved with The Granary and dentist’s.
That site is likely to be next for action after The Red Cow.

Coun Porter suggested readers of local newspapers could vote which site on the list (see below) should be next.
The Bridge Hotel in Sutton Bridge, land under the railway bridge in Green Lane, Spalding, and a derelict house near The New Inn in Holbeach St Marks were all suggested as additions to the list.
