Revealed: The food premises in South Holland with worst hygiene rating

Three food establishments in South Holland have the lowest possible food hygiene rating.

San San. High Street, Long Sutton

Zero-rated: San San, High Street, Long Sutton

Long Sutton takeaways San San, in High Street, and Chilli Hut, in Market Place, are zero-rated, as is Toppings in Westlode Street, Spalding.

The rating reflects the food hygiene procedures, structure and cleanliness, and confidence in management.

Importantly, it is not based on any other factors such as food quality, choice or customer service.

Officers at South Holland District Council are responsible for carrying out the inspections.
They offer advice and explain what improvements need to be made to any establishment not achieving the top rating.

In the district on November 21, there were 616 premises which had been rated.
284 rated 5 – very good
179 rated 4 – good
120 rated 3 – generally satisfactory
15 rated 2 – improvement necessary
15 rated 1 – major improvement necessary
3 rated 0 – urgent improvement necessary

The district council recently pursued a prosecution, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued for Rafat Thoun, who faces many food hygiene charges relating to the now-closed Time Square in Winsover Road, Spalding.

Coun Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for environmental health, said: “The food, health and safety team work hard to protect the public. If a business is falling below an acceptable standard, they will be dealt with using a variety of means.

“We have been targeting poorly performing premises. Whilst we will try and help and support businesses, if they do not make the necessary improvements, then formal enforcement action will be taken. Within the last year the team has served 18 hygiene improvement notices to failing businesses (those with the lowest ratings).
“A prosecution has been taken and others are currently under consideration.”

He added: “The team does not just focus on enforcement but also offers support and education through coaching sessions to bring the business out of the 0/1/2 rating brackets.

“Following interventions (coaching, training etc.) around 85 per cent of those businesses improved their hygiene practices, 50 per cent increased their food hygiene rating by 2 or more rating bands.”

As well as the coaching scheme, the district council has a training centre providing nationally recognised qualifications on food hygiene and health and safety. It has trained more than 2,600 people.

The National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme was developed by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). To check ratings go to www.food.gov.uk
