Rare win for the Irish supporters in Spalding Golf Club’s Shillelagh Tropy

Some 80 participants took part in Spalding Golf Club’s Shillelagh Trophy this year.

As ever, the match at the Surfleet course was held between a team supporting England and a team supporting Ireland.

A great day was enjoyed by all and, for the first time since 2013, the Ireland supporting team was victorious 11.5-8.5.

Following the day’s play there was a social dinner, while the raffle and various forfeits awarded amounted to £445 – to be split between the charities of the three club captains.

  • Spalding Seniors gained a 4.5-3.5 win as they played host to a team from Burghley Park Golf Club on Monday.

Debutant Trevor Chinery and Albert Jacobs won handsomely 5&4, while special mention goes to Michael Bates and Peter Dewar who came back to draw after being four down at the tenth hole.

  • Some 22 pairs of ladies entered Spalding’s Coronation Foursome event – with Jackie Bailey Scott and Dina Reedman emerging as the winners.

A total of 34 Stableford points was enough for them to see off Sally West and Jean Wilkinson (33pts) and Anne Ellis and Jean White (32pts) in second and third places respectively.

  • Spalding’s annual Gold Medal competition was a very close affair this year.

To qualify, the ladies have to win a medal competition in the previous season.

Of those qualifying, six were able to play and the winner, on count back, was Paula Brown with a net 75.

Amanda Camm, also with 75, was second with Elizabeth Holbrook (76) just behind in third.

On the same day as the Gold Medal event, a fun competition was organised by the lady captain.

This was a reverse traffic light Stableford competition, making some very long holes for the ladies, especially the second and 13th both over water.

Despite this the 32 lady entrants had fun and the winner was Jane Blom (32pts), ahead of Sally West, (31pts) and Jean White (31pts).

At the end of play a presentation was made to Ruth Atkins, by Lady Captain Lainy Macleman for her hole-in-one earlier in the season.

  • The winners of this this year’s winter foursomes knockout competition, the President’s Putter, were Olive Gooderson and Sue Matthews.
