Pinchbeck United player/boss Ian Dunn admits that his side face two tough fixtures over the Easter period as they bid to clinch fourth place in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division.
The Knights are aiming to deny Daventry Town the title at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on Saturday (3pm) when they entertain the table-toppers, before making the short trip to Carter’s Park and South Holland rivals Holbeach United (3pm).
Dunn is hopeful that his side well emerge unbeaten from the fixtures, but does have a few selection concerns with Andrew Tidswell out and key trio Nick Jackson, Chris Shipley and Luke Wilson all carrying knocks.
“It’ll be a tough weekend,” admitted the player/boss. “It’s always a tough time of the year with two games so quickly, but we’ve got two hard fixtures.
“We’d probably take two draws, if I’m honest. We’ve got that cushion in fourth now and, if Holbeach don’t beat us, they’ll find it hard to overhaul us.
“Obviously we’d like to beat Daventry as it’s never great to see another team celebrate at your ground.
“They’re effectively champions already, but we were in the same situation last year (when they won the UCL Division One title) and you just want to get over the line.
“It’s our job to spoil their party and that’s what we’ll try to do.
“They deserve the title, they’ve been the best side this year. But I’d rather not see them win it against us!
“As for Holbeach, it’s a good one for the fans.
“We know what kind of game that will be and it’s a case of ‘just don’t lose’ really, as I don’t think they’ll have any chance of finishing ahead of us if they don’t win.
“They aren’t in the best of form, but that will count for little. We’ve got a few knocks, so we’ll have to manage that and see what kind of team we can get out there.”
Pinchbeck go into the Easter fixtures six points clear of Cogenhoe United in fifth and seven ahead of Holbeach in sixth with just nine points left to play for.
They finish their season at home to Oadby Town next Saturday.
