TENCH WARFARE: Steve Borrett with Sunday's winning haul.

Mixed conditions for Tydd anglers

Dennis Houghton and Steve Borrett were the big winners of Tydd Gote Angling Club’s festive fixtures.

The former was the victor of the annual Christmas match at the 20 Foot Drain at March on December 22 where they were met with a drain bank high and steadily pushing through.

Houghton drew the peg he didn’t want, hot peg three, but still romped away with the spoils after a commanding performance fishing maggot and pinkie on a top two and top three to take 9lb 2oz of mainly roach.

Ian Benton was runner up from peg seven and also fished close in for some slightly better quality roach and perch on maggot for a level 4lb, just edging Andrew Kilby’s 3lb 15oz of small fish from peg 2.

Pete Emery took fourth place with 3lb 5oz on what was a hard day’s fishing.

  • There was a good turnout for the latest Tydd Gote Angling Club Sunday match on December 29 at Main Road and with the drain low and running again, most wanted a draw near to the bridge.

Borrett was some way from the bridge on peg five but in an area that can throw up an odd tench or two.

So it proved as he found three good specimens to his worm and red maggot over caster at 11m to take the win with 15lb 2oz.

Emery was next door on peg six and had to wait until the drain stopped running before the tench moved to him but he also found three in the last hour using similar tactics for 14lb 2oz and second place.

Andy Lawrence was on the concrete and fished the whip short with bronze maggot to take a mixed net of silvers for 12lb 2oz for third with Kilby on the first platform above the bridge taking 10lb 6oz of roach, rudd and skimmers on a three metre whip and maggot for fourth spot

With other good backing weights approaching 9lb the drain fished consistently well.

* Wednesday Open at Main Road: 1. Pete Emery 18lb 8oz 2. John Taylor 13lb 6oz 3. Don Green 7lb 10oz.
