Lynn joins elite band after her American adventure

A yoga teacher from Whaplode St Catherine has joined an elite band of instructors after an impulsive decision to jet off to America for specialist training.

Lynn Exley, who runs Wellbeing for Living, decided to join the Foundation Training scheme after struggling with a bad back.

Despite the intensive training being held in Florida, Lynn decided to briefly swap South Holland for the United States to gain the necessary qualifications.

And the hard work has paid off for the 53-year-old who is now one of only seven qualified Foundation Training instructors in the country.

Lynn explained: “Last year I was struggling with a bad back.

“It was a big problem for me as a yoga teacher and keen golfer. It was really getting in the way of things.

“Yoga is generally recommended for bad backs, but mine wasn’t getting better and an MRI scan last October showed a bulging disc and degeneration.

“In December, by chance, I discovered Foundation Training. I started doing the exercises from the online course.

“After just 15 minutes a day of practice, the searing sciatic pain from my back down into my leg had gone within a week.

“I was so blown away with how well this had worked for me that I just knew that I needed to train to become a certified Foundation Training instructor so I could share this.

“The training was over an intensive four days with 50 hours teaching practice. It was expensive and in Florida.

“I go to Cornwall for my holidays so getting on a plane and going to the USA is not something I do.”

Lynn contacted Kate Gray, one of the few UK certified Foundation instructors who is based in Southampton, to see if the epic trip was worthwhile.

After Kate’s enthusiastic response to Lynn’s plan, she jetted off to Florida to complete the training and is now running courses in the South Holland area.

Lynn added: “The training was amazing. Importantly, more than 50 local people of all ages and abilities have already benefited from learning and practicing these simple exercises in a very specific way.

“Kate and I are now good friends and keep in touch regularly. We are planning workshops for backs for golfers at their clubs.

“Although you don’t have to have a bad back to benefit from this as it makes good backs feel great and it’s put yards on my golf drive.”

Lynn’s Foundation Training classes are on Sunday from 9am-10am at Moulton Community Centre.
