Long Sutton Parish Council is proposing that part of its land at Cinder Ash Park becomes a cemetery extension.
The council has just three years’ burial space left and, after consulting with residents, has put forward land at the rear of the football pitch in London Road.
In a statement accompanying the change of use application to South Holland District Council, the parish council says: “The proposed extension is easily accessible both on foot and by car and is on the main bus route so is easy for families to visit, in particular the elderly and disabled members of our community.
“Many have also expressed a wish to be buried in the same cemetery as their families, with some families having three or four generations interred there.
“Residents have expressed that Seagate Road site is more remote, it is too far out of town for the elderly and disabled residents to access on foot, it is not on the main bus route and can only be reasonably accessed by car.
“The town has two park areas and in comparison to the size of the town the parks provision is much larger than in other nearby towns and the council feel that utilising what is a small part of the parks to provide a burial ground easily accessible to all is acceptable.”
The council says the extensions would come at a modest cost, whereas the bill for ground modifications, roadways and utilities at Seagate Road could be as much as £450,000.
It is proposed that netting is put up behind the football goal at the far end of the London Road pitch to prevent footballs being kicked into the cemetery.
