Learn to help dementia sufferers with gardening activities training

Carers and individuals connected with people living with dementia are invited to a training course aimed at helping them to set up therapeutic gardening activities.

‘Gardening for the Brain’ is a new one-day training course being held by South Holland District Council in conjunction with Green Synergy, a charity which uses community gardening and horticultural therapy to help improve people’s lives.

The event is at the Diamond Room at the Curlew Centre in Bridge Road, Sutton Bridge, PE12 9SA on Friday, February 3 from 10am until 4pm.

The session is aimed at helping care staff, activity leaders, carers or family members of people living with dementia.

A council spokesman said: “Therapeutic gardening is of real benefit to people with mental health conditions and can help them recover after an illness or difficult time in their lives.

“The course is suitable for anyone who looks after or works with people with dementia. It is not suitable for individuals with dementia to attend.”

Participants will be given practical advice on creating dementia friendly gardens, techniques for delivering adapted gardening activities plus some hands-on experience.

They will receive a full day’s training, an attendance certificate, a copy of the “Gardening for the Brain” resource pack as well as morning and afternoon refreshments.

Tickets cost £25 for organisations and £5 for family carers/volunteers. Places are limited, so to request a place call 01522 533077 or email Jodie@greensynergy.org.uk.

Bookings will need to be in place by Monday, January 23.
