Large fire destroys plant pot storage building

Five fire crews battled a large fire on the outskirts of Spalding in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The blaze was at a satellite nursery of Opperman Plants on the former Geest site on Pecks Drove West and was reported at around 6.20am.

The building, which was, being used to store plant pots, was completely destroyed.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue say the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Mike Opperman, who leased it for storage told The Voice it was the fifth time in the last two years that there had been a fire at the site.

He said: “We’ve had issues with people sleeping rough in the building and fires in the past from the likes of discarded cigarettes.

“It’s been an exciting time having this storage space, but it’s time to move on from these premises now.”

Crews from Holbeach, Crowland, Boston and two from Spalding battled the blaze and used two hose reels, two main jets, a main pump, a light portable pump, two thermal imaging cameras and drags to extinguish it.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said: “This incident resulted in severe damage by fire to one agricultural building measuring approximately 20 metres by 10 metres and its contents.

“The building was used to store plastic plant pots.

“There was light damage by fire to soffits and the outside of an adjacent derelict brick building.

“The cause was unknown and fire crews are re-inspecting this morning to check it’s safe.”
