Labour leader, Pub Landlord and MP back Moulton man’s nuclear medal bid

A Moulton man’s campaign for medals to be awarded to nuclear test veterans has received big-name backing.

Douglas Hern (81), is the historian for the British Nuclear Test Veterans (BNTVA) and has been a driving force in the group’s campaign for recognition for the damage suffered as a result of exposure to radiation.

The cause was furthered this week with a mention in Parliament by the group’s newly appointed patron, South Holland and the Deepings MP John Hayes, and a number of high profile people joining the campaign.

On Wednesday, June 6, an event at the Houses of Parliament was organised by journalist Susie Boniface and The Daily Mirror.

Support was lent by satirical comedian Al Murray, best known for his Pub Landlord character, and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The day after the meeting, Mr Hayes brought up the issue in Parliament. He said: “There are just 1,500 survivors of the 22,000 who were sent to far-off places for those nuclear tests.

“One wrote ‘We are doomed to spend our time in a land that time forgot.’

“We are the only country that does not recognise them formally and they are now asking for a medal.

“I wonder if the Leader of the House will ask a Defence Minister to come to this House and confirm that the Government will award that medal, so we can give to those who gave so much for us.”

Regarding his new role, Mr Hayes said: “Having been the Vice Patron of the British Nuclear Test Veterans Association for some time, I was delighted and honoured to be asked to take up the role of Patron.

“I will continue to work with the BNTVA and Douglas Hern to help secure recognition and compensation for veterans.”
