There was a big moment for Holbeach United Youth last week when the first sod was cut for its new £504,000 facility, named Kings Academy.

Members of the many junior football sides joined trustees of Holbeach United Community Sports Academy at the Pennyhill site to see Holbeach county councillor Nick Worth do the honours.

The scheme started seven years ago when late town businessman John King – a longtime supporter of the Tigers – offered to donate 15 acres of land to the benefit of the local community.

The facility will be built by Holbeach firm Langwith Builders and include a community hall and changing rooms. Construction is expected to take about six months.
Youngsters of all age groups and abilities from under-six through to under-18 will benefit.

The project has received funding from Sport England, Ashley King Developments, Lincolnshire County Council, South Holland District Council, Wren and Coun Worth.
The scheme also includes a housing element.
