Fitter, happier Geoff Palmer (67) after a successful 10k run.

It’s never too late says charity runner

A Long Sutton man has proved it’s never too late to start running as he prepares for his first sponsored half marathon.

Retired headteacher Geoff Palmer (67) takes part in the Ely Half Marathon on September 24.

He has completed two 10k races but the 13.1-mile course in Ely will be his biggest challenge yet.

Geoff said his health and happiness have greatly improved since he started running and encourages others to do the same.

Geoff started off being able to run just 100m. The key, he says, is to “start slowly”.

“You may well feel self conscious at first but I have only had positive comments from people in the street,” Geoff said.

“You will find it hard but keep at it and the benefits to your health and to your outlook on life soon start.

You feel set up for the day and are ready to face whatever it brings. Running increases self esteem and self confidence.” he added.

Geoff runs at least three miles, five mornings a week, with a longer run (six to eight miles) once a week.

Parkruns – 5k events organised around the country – are a nice way to add a social side to the solitary activity, said Geoff.

“Parkruns are great – there are always a couple of dozen walkers, many of whom graduate from walking to jogging and then to running. Everyone is encouraged and celebrated.”

When the positive effects of running start to show, they can be contagious, explained Geoff.

“My daughter has seen how running has improved my health, my weight and my fitness and she took up running a few months ago and ran her first 10k last weekend.

“Her fiancé has begun the Couch to 5k programme which is available to anyone online. It aims to take anyone from walking and jogging through to running 5k within nine weeks.”

Geoff first started running when he received a letter saying he’d slipped into the overweight category and was at risk of developing diabetes. He has since got down to a healthy weight and improved both his physical and mental health.

“I haven’t had a cold or any other illnesses.

“My wife died 16 months before I began running. I often felt down but the exercise has improved my mental health and I am definitely stronger mentally.”

Another perk for Geoff is being able to enjoy good food and wine. “Running lets me eat the same amount as I used to and not put weight on as I burn more calories!”

Geoff is running to raise money for Long Sutton St Mary’s Church.
