Hockey round-up: Two hit trebles in gr-eight win for Spalding 3rd

Both Ben Scholes and Glenn Richardson helped themselves to hat-tricks as Spalding 3rd romped to an 8-0 win at Alford 1st on Saturday.

Daniel Dorey Rodriguez and Frazer Watt were also on target for Spalding in the East Men’s Hockey League Division 4NW clash, which leaves them third in the table.

The two sides above them are both South Holland-based, too.

Leading the way are Long Sutton 2nd, who picked up a 4-1 success over Wisbech 3rd.

Their goals came from Josh Fyson (2), Luke Proctor and Tyler Hagan, while Adam Taylor was man of the match.

They are three points clear of Spalding 2nd, who romped to a 5-2 home success over Kettering 2nd.

Dan Azzopardi, Richard McKenna, Glenn Perkins, Sullivan Smith and Ryan Mountney all netted in a game that saw George Nairn impress with a tireless display.

Up in Premier B, Spalding 1st suffered a 3-2 loss at Havering 1st as they slipped to fifth in the table.

Stuart Cunnington’s cool drag flick from a corner put them ahead, but they fell asleep and slipped 2-1 behind at the break.

After both sides had players carded early in the second period, Spalding punished their ten-man hosts with another Cunnington short corner.

With both teams getting aggressive, Havering’s winning goal – which resulted in Spalding player Ralph Newbold being struck in the face by a player – before he continued on to score.

Meanwhile, Long Sutton 1st were humbled 7-3 at St Ives 1st in Division 2N.

Alex Canham, Josh Baker, Harry Synnott netted for Sutton in the defeat.

Down in Division 5NW, Spalding 4th remain in the bottom three after slipping to a 2-0 home loss against Horncastle 2nd.

Also beaten were Spalding 5th in Division 6NW (N). They were beaten 3-1 at City of Peterborough 8th, despite Andy Barlow’s strike.

There was better news for Long Sutton 3rd in the same division, as they beat Bourne Deeping 6th.

Ian White (2) and Sam Smith grabbed their goals.

  • Spalding Poachers 1st were handed a hefty 6-0 beating by East Women’s Hockey League Division 2NW leaders City of Peterborough 2nd on Saturday.

The ladies impressed in first 30 minutes and produced a resilient and cohesive performance, with Claire Hindmarsh – as always – showing true class in delivering the balls out of defence.

But they couldn’t keep it up and the city side romped to victory.

In the same division, Long Sutton ladies’ 1st were edged out 3-2 by St Ives 1st.

Amber Jones and Connie Gittins netted for Sutton in a game that saw both Emmy Gittins and Tania White impress.

It was a similar story for Spalding Poachers 2nd in Division 3NW, as they were handed a 3-0 reverse by hosts Cambridge Uni 3rd.

Down in Division 4NW (N), Spalding Poachers 3rd picked up a 1-1 draw against City of Peterborough 4th. Sophie Smith netted for Spalding, who remain in the top four.

Long Sutton 2nd, meanwhile, lost 3-1 against Horncastle 2nd despite a Katie Collingwood-Smith strike.
