Golf round-up: Harry holds off strong field to seal super Salver success at Spalding

Harry Hunt was celebrating at Spalding Golf Club last Saturday as he lifted the coveted Tester Salver crown.

A score of +3 at the Surfleet course was enough for Hunt to top the leaderboard in the men’s club championship (0-17 handicap, 36-hole gross).

Charles Lacey (+7), Calum Lewis (+9) and Spencer Gooderson (+12) completed the top four.

Including the main Tester Salver event itself, some 140 players competed in the competition – with a mixture of some playing 18 and others 36 holes.

Three other trophies were up for grabs on the day, depending on the handicap of the player and the nature of the scoring.

In the ‘Square’ side of the event (0-17 handicap, 18-hole nett), Dan Hines was the victor after shooting a 66.

Behind him in second was Luke Chilvers (68), while Trevor Laud pipped Mark Cooley to third after both scored 69.

Also up for grabs was the ‘Plaque’, an 18-hole gross contest for those with 18-54 handicaps.

Jack Bettinson (88) was the clear winner, four shots clear of Roy Blake in second.

Oliver Terrington (93) and Dave Fitter (95) rounded off the top four.

The ‘Circle’ contest saw those with 18-54 handicap playing 18 holes (nett), with Andrew Green (73) the victor on countback.

Chris Flynn and Will Langford were second and third respectively after also scoring 73, while Shawn Huggins was fourth on 74.

  • Some 22 teams from around the county competed in the Spalding Golf Club Mixed Am-Am last Sunday.

This event saw teams of four (two ladies and two men) playing off 90 per cent handicaps, with two scores to count on each hole.

Result: 1st Susan Brown (14), Ray Brown (9), Chris Bishop (24) & Dave Bishop (15) 80; 2nd O Gooderson (19), P Gooderson (14), S Gooderson (4) & J Gooderson (23) 75; 3rd Elaine MacLeman (22), N Wilkinson (7), J Wilkinson (24) & A Farnham (8) 75; 4th C Hancock (7), Elaine Hancock (10), R Townshend (11) & S Clarke (6) 75.

Seniors’ section: Spalding lost their latest fixture at Woodhall Spa last Monday – but at least secured overall bragging rights against their rivals.

They were beaten 5-3, but the overall score between the two sides was 8.5-7.5 in their favour.

Ladies’ section: Anita Cross claimed victory in Spalding’s June Medal, which was run in conjunction with the Millennium Cup.

Some 38 lady members entered the competition, with Cross’ net 73 enough to edge Sally West (handicap cut of one) into second on countback.

Lesley Williams shot a 74 to complete the podium.

Match result: King’s Lynn ladies 2.5 Spalding ladies 1.5 (Lainey Macleman and Margaret Barkway lost 2&1, Chris Vickers and Gill Dewhurst lost 3&2, Sue Dewar and Carole Holland won 1up and Jean Wilkinson and Beryl Clay halved).

Match result: Lincoln ladies 2 Spalding ladies A 2 (Dianne Rafferty and Claire Rylott lost 2 down, Elizabeth Holbrook and Nicky Weller won 1up, Lesley Williams and Paula Brown won 5&4, Gill Dewhurst and Anita Cross lost 3&2).

Gedney Hill Golf Club

The popular Daniel Markillie Memorial Competition was supported by 125 golfers of all abilities this year.

Wally Lawes was the overall champion and winner of the men’s competition with an outstanding 47 points.

Rob Bye (46pts) was second ahead of Roy Bennett (45pts), while the ladies’ competition was won by Nicky Weller with 45 points.

Lynn Exley (42pts) and Chris Bennett with (41pts) made up the top three.

Men’s section: June Medal – 1st Steve Porter 65; 2nd Robin Exley 66; 3rd Eddie Grange 67.

Ladies section: Friendly fixture: Gedney Hill 3 Kirton Holme 0 (Chris Bennett & Ann Chick won 3&2; Kim Markillie & Christine Lord won 3&2; Maggie Bingham & Janet Davis won 5&4).
