Goal-shy Holbeach United looking to shed unwanted record in Selston ‘six-pointer’

Holbeach United must figure out how to smash one of non-league’s worst records if they are to end their unwanted winless run in the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North.

The Tigers, who sit bottom of the table with just two draws and ten defeats from 12 games, host relegation rivals Selston at Carter’s Park on Saturday (3pm).

While Holbeach were losing 3-0 at Leicester Nirvana last weekend, Selston picked up a potentially priceless 1-0 victory over Skegness Town to move out of the drop zone for the first team this season.

The Tigers now have the worst goalscoring record of any non-league team at steps five and six of the non-league ladder with just three goals in 12 games.

Gary Frost’s side haven’t actually scored a goal in the league since a 2-1 reverse against Quorn at Carter’s Park back on August 28.

That’s a run of eight league games and highlights the Tigers’ need for extra firepower.

Frost, who only took over from Phil Barnes a few weeks ago, is looking at how he can improve the Tigers’ toothless attack.

“I’m aware of the stat and it’s something we’re trying to improve,” said Frost. “If you don’t score goals, you’re not going to win any games.

“It’s that simple, really – we need to get more attacking options in and I’m working very hard to get deals done.

“The Selston game is a huge one, we all know that.

“I think it’s one of those games you’d describe as a six-pointer.

“We’ve simply got to find a way to win the game, I’m not overly sure that a draw does much for us at this point.

“They got a win last weekend and all of a sudden a few of our rivals have moved a little further ahead of us.

“We need to get points on the board before we fall further adrift.”

Holbeach hope to have veteran Matt Warfield back in the squad for Saturday’s relegation battle, while Jake Clitheroe is a doubt after missing the 3-0 defeat at Leicester Nirvana.

Midfielder Tyler Wright won’t be involved after leaving the club for rivals Sleaford Town, while captain Nick Jackson has announced on Twitter that he is also on his way out of Carter’s Park.

Meanwhile, Holbeach’s only win of the season, a 5-0 Lincs Senior Trophy triumph at Blackstones, has been chalked off the record books after the Tigers fielded an ineligible player.

They have been kicked out of the competition and Blackstones have been reinstated.
