Flower Parade legacy set to continue in 2014

The legacy of Spalding Flower Parade is set to continue in 2014 – all thanks to people power.

The Spalding People’s Parade will echo the tradition of the town’s historic event with a smaller, cart-based parade on Sunday, June 22.

Around 20 hand-carts, created by local schools, businesses and charities will leave the Sir John Gleed School at around 1pm and travel a two-mile route along Halmergate and the riverside.

To coincide, event organisers have also planned a series of family entertainments at the school site, starting from 11am including free entry, stalls, entertainments, games and food.

Members of the organising committee – led by Ian Smee and including John Aitkinson, a founding Tulip Parade participant, president of South Holland Rotary Bruce Alexander and Polish teacher and interpreter Anna Smolen all supported by MP John Hayes – are keen to hear from anyone who would like to take part.

Mr Smee said: “It is really important to continue the legacy of the parade and give the town a family friendly event to remember.

“All supporters are welcome and encouraged.”

The parade carts are about 2.4 by 1.2 metres and are light enough to be pushed by one person.

The floats will be colourful and fun and be hand made by organisers, schools and businesses.
