Fast-starting Clitheroe hits a super six in gr-eight Tydd St Mary romp

Top scorer Jake Clitheroe scored after just eight seconds en-route to a double hat-trick as Tydd St Mary bounced back to winning ways with an 8-2 victory at Glinton and Northborough in the PFA Challenge Cup.

Clitheroe seized upon a mistake and punished hosts Glinton with a great strike to give the Saints the earliest of leads, then Jason Bradshaw made it 2-0 after 28 minutes when Eddy Pentney ghosted in from the left and put in a searching cross.

Clitheroe then made it 3-0 when Alan Burch teed him up to rifle home on 33 minutes. Burch was instrumental again on 40 minutes when he whipped in a great free-kick that saw Clitheroe flick on and Dan Piccaver volley in for 4-0.

The second half was much the same story with the Saints on the front foot and ex-Holbeach United hitman Clitheroe causing all sorts of problems for the Glinton defence.

The striker made it 5-0 on 51 minutes when Pentney found him with a good ball to slot home – and just six minutes later Clitheroe made it 6-0 with an almost carbon copy goal, only this time he was fed by Bradshaw.

Tydd’s domination of the game continued and Clitheroe was on hand in the 69th minute to fire home under the keeper’s body after a good ball in from Tim Lowe.

Clitheroe made it 8-0 for the now rampant Saints on 73 minutes after Stu Easey laid a great ball in behind the defence.

The strike was his 27th goal of the season from just eight games. Amazingly, that only makes his the second top scorer in ChromaSport PDFL Division One.

Peterborough Polonia’s Adrian Mizia – who also netted six on Saturday – has 30 in 11 games.

Tydd are back in league action at Netherton United Reserves on Saturday (2pm).

Tydd St Mary: Cooper, Burrell, Bradshaw, Burch, D Clitheroe, Kirkham, Pentney, Piccaver, Slator, J Clitheroe. Subs: Ainslie, Lowe, Smith.
