Expansion plan for Spalding Aldi store

Aldi is planning to extend its Spalding store in the near future.

The discount supermarket has confirmed that it wants to extend the Winsover Road store and provide more car park spaces.

The Voice understands that the development would be achieved by demolishing a small number of neighbouring properties.
A spokesman told us: “Aldi owns a number of units on the Spalding site and intends to apply for planning permission later this year to extend the existing store and improve the car parking facilities for its customers.”

The units believed to be earmarked for demolition as part of the plans are Winsover off-licence and two adjoining units which are empty on the ground floor. These were formerly the premises of Motorcare and Telerig Aerials.

The only business still operating within the units is Uniq Employment Services, which is soon moving to a more prominent town-centre location.
Uniq’s lease expires in September and the firm is in the process of buying the Hall Place premises of menswear retailer Mann and Son. Owner Nigel Mann put the property up for sale in January 2015, when he announced his intention to retire.

Aldi opened its Spalding store in 2000.
The expansion plan has been welcomed by town centre manager Dennis Hannant, who said: “Aldi are progressing year on year, giving people what they want.
“The development and expansion will undoubtedly be a good thing for Spalding.
“The streetscene there will also be greatly improved.”
