Edey eyes silverware but tells Holbeach United not to underestimate Buckingham

Assistant boss Daz Edey has urged Holbeach United not to take Division One side Buckingham Town lightly in Saturday’s UCL KO Cup clash.

The Tigers, who have been a revelation in cup competitions this season, will book a favourable quarter-final with Harrowby United if they can win at The Irish Centre (3pm).

But, having been knocked out by second tier side Olney Town last season, number two Edey has warned against complacency.

Buckingham, who have won eight of their ten league games this term, knocked out Premier Division Oadby Town in the last round.

And Edey, who was with Oakham United last season, says they were the best team he saw in his time with them.

“I remember being really impressed by them last season,” said the Tigers’ assistant. “They were easily the best team we faced then.

“And that’s continued this season – if they win their games in hand, they’ll go clear at the top.

“They are clearly a strong side and it’ll be a very tough test for us.

“We need to go there and apply ourselves correctly. If we have the right attitude and workrate, I’d back us against anybody – as we showed against Grantham Town a few months back.

“We’ve not really clicked going forward in recent weeks. But we’ve had a lot of injuries and niggles, though, so it’s good that we’ve not had a midweek game for once.

“We can’t just turn up at Buckingham and expect to win because they are a Division One side.

“If we do, we’ll be out.”

With Holbeach having reached the Lincs Senior Trophy semi-final with a penalty shoot-out win over Deeping Rangers at Carter’s Park last Wednesday night (they will meet Bourne Town), Edey feels that going far in the UCL KO Cup is another realistic goal for his side.

“The cups are very important to us,” added the number two. “We could reach Christmas and have two semi-finals to look forward to.

“The spirit in our dressing room is as good as I’ve ever seen in my career. Reaching the latter stages of cup competitions will only help with that.

“We’re not one of those sides with the budget to go for the league, so we’ve always targeted the cups.

“Can we win one? Why not, we’ll have a go. It’s all about getting our attitude right on the day.”

Lewis Leckie and Stacy Cartwright are both injury doubts, while Charley Sanders is still banned.
