Dubai dream for Gedney Hill Golf Club duo Rob and David after Morocco misery

Gedney Hill Golf Club duo David Lord and Rob Newns endured mixed fortunes in their bid to qualify for the finals of two huge events.

The amateur golfers just missed out an expenses-paid trip of a lifetime to Morocco in the UK regional northern senior pairs final of the 2016 Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo.

Business owner David Lord (67), who is a 15-handicapper from Spalding, and 67-year-old civil servant Rob News, from Wisbech, who plays off 13, scored 32 points at the Morocco Matchplay northern regional final at Slaley Hall in Northumberland as they missed out on a trip to February’s grand final in Marrakech.

They missed out on complimentary return flights from Gatwick to Marrakech, courtesy of the event’s partner British Airways, five nights’ luxury bed-and-breakfast accommodation in the five-star Palmeraie Palace, four rounds of championship golf on the Robert Trent Jones-designed PalmGolf Marrakech Palmeraie, a cocktail reception and a last-night gala dinner and prize presentation.

But, one week later, Lord and News qualified to play in the Grand Finals of the League to Dubai competition.

They played in the Southern regional final held at Tudor Park Marriott Hotel and Country Club, Maidstone, Kent.

The competition was extremely close, with only four points separating the top 15 pairs.

They will be heading out to Dubai in March 2017 to play in the final.
