Dementia help proposed for Crowland

Groups are coming together in a bid to improve the lives of people in Crowland affected by dementia.

Setting up a regular cafe for those with the condition and their carers is one idea being looked at by charity Tonic Health, Crowland Cares and Abbeyview Surgery.

The organisations are looking at the possibility of setting up a dementia day service some time in 2019.

Tonic Health runs similar services in and around Spalding but is looking to expand.

But they want to hear from Crowland residents about how then can improve the lives of dementia sufferers in the town.

That’s why they’re holding an introductory coffee morning where the plans to improve services in the town will be discussed on Thursday, January 31.

They’re urging those with dementia, their carers and family members, together with any other local organisations or individuals interested to hear more and help shape what dementia services will look like.

It takes place at the Royal British Legion Hall from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

Chair of Trustees for Tonic Health, Michael Morris said: “Feedback from this event will be used to ensure material and content delivered is what the local population wish to receive.

“We currently run a very established and successful dementia program in Spalding and wish to expand this service to benefit more across the wider area.”

A statement released by the groups says: “The intention is to provide a regular dementia cafe, for people with dementia, their carers and family members to attend, with a view to expand and establish a dementia day care service within a year, subject to demand.

“Tonic Health currently deliver a weekly dementia cafe, Movement 4Memory, a dementia day care service, FOCUS, a monthly carers support group and a reminiscence TV and Film Club.

“These projects are a mixture of Big Lottery and NHS funding. Tonic Health were recently awarded the South Holland Business Award for Supporting the Community. Meanwhile, fellow collaborators Abbeyview Surgery won a national award at the General Practice Awards 2018 held in Westminster recently.

“This project will be backed through help and the assistance of members from Crowland Cares who provide the local knowledge and experience required to make new members feel at home in their new group.”

On the January 21 coffee morning the statement continued: “Attendance on the day is free, and will involve a Dementia Friends session, talks and activities for both carers and cared for, all served with plenty of coffee and cake!”
