Cup drama brings back bad memories for Holbeach boss

Holbeach United now have a date and seemingly a new opponent in their League Cup Final.

The show-piece is set to take place at Raunds Town on Bank Holiday Monday, May 6.

But rather than play Deeping Rangers in a local derby, they will instead play Future Lions United Counties League leaders Daventry who lost the semi-final between those two teams 6-2.

Deeping have been thrown out of the competition for bringing on a 92nd minute sub who had already played for Boston Town in the competition.

Tigers boss Danny Hussey is disappointed for Deeping and said it brought flashbacks to when he was part of the Spalding United side kicked out of the FA Vase in 2013 after playing an 85th minute sub, Garfield Robinson, who’d also played for another club in the same competition, but under different name.

“From a local point of view it’s a shame as it would have been a real local derby at a local ground that would have got lots of local people coming to watch on a Bank Holiday,” he said. “It would have been a great game.

“I don’t think the player in question coming on for two or three minutes would make much of a difference and I understand why Deeping reported it.

“It happened to me at Spalding when we were in the Vase, so I know how they feel.”

If Deeping’s appeal is accepted, a venue for the final closer to either side could be considered.

Holbeach drew 1-1 with Rothwell Corinthians on Saturday in an improved performance after a 3-0 loss to Newport Pagnell.

Hussey described it as “a better reaction” and says those that came in have given him something to think about when it comes to picking a team for this weekend when the fourth placed Tigers visit sixth placed Cogenhoe.

“Lewie Harker came in on the left, Jordan Lockie was back from illness and we had Cal Davies in midfield who did well when he got to grips with the game.

“We also had Will Barnes come on to continue the Barnes dynasty at Holbeach which was good to see.

“It’s always a hard place to go, even when I was a player.

“It’s one of those places that always seems to be windy, event when it’s not.

“We’re going to need to play well to get a good result against a good side.

“We’re expecting a tough game and we’ll be looking to come away with a result.”

Ahead of the game Holbeach are awaiting the outcome of their seven day approach for Peterborough Northern Star’s creative midfielder Jake Sansby.
