Cricket round-up: Stanway and Simpson star as Long Sutton pummel Park to stay second

A belligerent blitz from Barry Stanway fired Long Sutton to another big win in the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division on Saturday.

All-rounder Stanway smashed 88 from just 42 balls as Sutton crushed Belton Park by 182 runs to make it five wins from six games.

That barrage allowed Sutton to post 241-5 from their 45 overs, before Rob Simpson’s 6-14 spun out the visitors for just 59.

After winning the toss, unbeaten Sutton opted to bat first. Although they lost Peter Cook (13) early on, Chris Booth (51) and skipper Dan Oldfield (27) scored well.

Both departed and then Jamie Taylor (11) and Adam Wright (3) both went cheaply as the innings lost a bit of impetus.

But Stanway saw to that, clubbing seven sixes and four fours to breeze past his half-century with a strike rate north of 200.

He and Angus Bell (23 not out) finished unbeaten at the end, leaving Sutton with a commanding tally to defend.

Belton’s reply never really got off the ground, with only two players making double figures.

Spinner Simpson was the star of the show with his stellar six-wicket haul, while Josh Baker (2-20), Charlie Crisp (1-5) and Stanway (1-17) chipped in to make short work of the batting order.

The 20-point haul leaves Sutton, who have yet to lose this season, just four points off leaders Skegness.

The pair meet at Paradise Field on Saturday (1pm).

• Spalding Town 1st bagged their second win of the SLBL Premier Division season as they defeated hosts Bourne 2nd by four wickets.

A great bowling display saw hosts Bourne dismissed for 138 in just 44.1 overs at the Abbey Lawn, with Josh Lawrence (3-42), Will Naylor (2-39), Harry Decamps (2-37), Nilantha Atapattu (1-20) and Jon Manton (1-0) all amongst the wickets.

James Tickler (50) and Ben Stroud (24) impressed for Bourne, but Spalding were firmly in the driving seat ahead of their reply.

However, a tricky start saw Manton (0), skipper Chris Dring (15) and Atapattu (10) all out cheaply.
It was number three Jay White (55) who turned the tide in Town’s favour, though, as they edged towards their total.

He passed 50 before becoming one of Stroud’s (3-30) three victims, leaving the lower order to finish off the run chase.

Like the bowling, it was a team effort for Spalding as Ben Smith (15), Ethan Lawrence (9 not out), Matt Gill (4) and Brandon Andrews (7 not out) edging them to 139-6 in 41 overs and 20 points.

• Moulton Harrox’s SLBL Premier Division fixture at Woodhall Spa 2nd was cancelled due to the rain, with both sides taking eight points.

It was also a day to forget for their second team in SLBL Division One, as they suffered a six-wicket defeat against Newborough at Broad Lane.

Matt Rose’s 28 was the only score to write home about in Moulton’s 75 all out in just 28.4 overs, as Matt Mills (4-14) starred with the ball.

Mike Knight (2-20), Curtis Todd (1-19) and Rose (1-16) all took wickets in the reply, but Newborough eased to 76-4 in 19.1 overs.

• Spalding Town 3rd were handed a 67-run reverse by Freiston L&L in SLBL Division Two.

Bowling first, impressive bowling from Barnaby Dring (2-17) and Eddie Seymour (2-30) left Freiston on 62-4 at the Memorial Field.

But unbeaten knocks from Tom Appleyard (57 not out) and Dan Lumley (53 not out) steered the away side to 171-4 in 40 overs.

It was slow going in reply, with Town only able to muster 104-4 in 40 overs.

Will Gardner (35) and Dring (21) scored well for Spalding, but they ended up with just four points for their efforts.
