Confident start as Tulips hit FA Cup trail

Tulips boss Dave Frecklington is hoping a confident start to the new season can inspire his side to make FA Cup progress on Saturday.

Spalding travel to face Ryman League Division One North side Bury Town for a preliminary round clash having returned a healthy four points from their opening two EvoStik League matches.

After drawing their Division One South opener at Bedworth on Saturday, Spalding got their home campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday night with a 2-0 victory over Carlton Town.

And Frecklington believes his newly-assembled side should be relishing Saturday’s cup clash at Ram Meadow.

He said: “We’ll go there full of confidence because it’s a massive game for us.

“They are a good side who play at the same level at us. We came into training on Thursday, re-grouped and now we will try to progress on Saturday.

“I want to make sure we get through a couple of rounds if we can because it’s important to the club.

“We have got a new group of players though and they’re still getting used to what we want from them.

“We are not the finished article and I would ask people to judge us more around Christmas time.

“But I couldn’t have asked for any more than a win in our first home game.

“We’ve got the three points we wanted on the board and that will be good for our confidence.”

Spalding face a Bury side who have made an even more impressive start to their Ryman League campaign.

The Blues have won both of their opening two league games after following up a 2-1 home success over Waltham Abbey at the weekend with a 3-2 away triumph at Witham Town on Tuesday.

The Tulips will be boosted by the return from suspension of summer signing Jordan Lemon who has yet to feature in competitive action for Spalding due to his ban.

Lemon played under Frecklington at Lincoln United last season and was named in the league’s team of the season, alongside Spalding skipper Nathan Stainfield, as the Whites reached the play-offs.

Frecklington enthused: “Having Jordan back is a massive positive for us. He will bring energy, pace and aggression.”

The winners of Saturday’s tie will face a trip to EvoStik League Premier Division side Mickleover Sports in the first qualifying round.
