Chance to try out a new hobby or revisit old ones

Older people are being given the chance to find new ways to love and enjoy later life through a free fun and friendly course.

The Active Living Programme consists of four two-hour sessions where the over 50s can find out about and try activities available in their area that help the health of both body and mind.
The course is being delivered by Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) health trainers in Boston, Spalding and Grantham.
Jan Gould-Martin, LCVS senior health and social care officer, said: “It’s an opportunity for people to revisit a hobby they once had or try something totally new in a friendly, no commitment, supportive environment and all for free.
“The programme is aimed at increasing levels of physical activity for the older population, to raise awareness of the importance of and opportunities to keep the mind and body active and to provide information on healthy lifestyles.
“Attendees will find out about activities and groups already available in their communities so although the programme is only four weeks long the aim is that people might find out about something that interests them or try something they love doing and be able to continue with it in the longer term.”
The courses will be tailor-made for each area to ensure activities promoted within them are available in the local area.
Activities could include things like seated exercise, tai chi or dance.
In addition there will be talks on subjects such as affordable warmth and volunteering opportunities – a fantastic way for older people to use their existing skills or indulge a passion whilst making a valued contribution.
Each session will include a chance for a free cup of tea and a chat with other attendees.
If they wish, attendees will have the opportunity to arrange to speak to an LCVS health trainer on a one-to-one basis for further informal and free tailored advice to improve their own health.
Barbara O’Neill, of Age UK Boston and South Holland, said: “Age UK Boston and South Holland is keen to support the Active Living Programme which is being offered by LCVS health trainers.
“Keeping healthy in mind and body helps us all to enjoy a more fulfilling later life, keeping us independent for longer.
“We would encourage anyone aged over 50 to go along to the sessions and take advantage of the opportunities on offer and to find out more about what’s available in their area.”
The Active Living Programme is funded by Lincolnshire County Council.
The four-week Active Living Programme takes place in Spalding at Tonic Health, 6 Broadgate House, Westlode Street, 2pm to 4pm, Thursday, August 6 to Thursday, August 27.
