Boss Hayes backing Holbeach United to become a force despite rocky start

Bullish boss Seb Hayes says that he believes in his Holbeach United players “150 per cent” – and feels that it’s only a matter of time before they become a force in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division.

The Tigers are without a win in three games ahead of Saturday’s trip to Rothwell Corinthians (3pm), but gained some much-needed momentum after battling back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Cogenhoe United last weekend.

Hayes feels that the last 25 minutes of the Carter’s Park draw was the best football his side have played all season, albeit with ten men, and wants to see that performance replicated at Rothwell.

“I believe in myself as a manager and I’m confident that what I’m doing at Holbeach is right,” said Hayes. “I also believe in the players 150 per cent.

“We’ve been doing everything right off the field, but the odd ten or 20-minute bad spell during games has been costing us dear.

“There’s obviously something wrong that we have to iron out, but the ability and desire is there for all to see.

“Confidence is high among the group despite the past three games, the fitness is good and we’re not lacking in self-belief.

“I think that we’re one good performance away from realising our potential and becoming a very, very good side in this league.

“It’s the best group of players I’ve had since the Huntingdon side that won a few trophies.”

Despite his bold words, Hayes won’t be underestimating Saturday’s opponents Rothwell. The boss knows that Corinthians remain fully motivated to beat his side following the well-documented abandoned fixture between the two back in 2016 and feels his side will need to up their game to get a result.

“No way will we under-estimate them,” added the Tigers boss. “We’ve got to be prepared to be in a physical scrap and be willing to work hard.

“If we don’t, we’ll lose. Holbeach have a really poor recent record against them, so this is the perfect game to show what we’re capable of.”

Holbeach, who are also in KO Cup action at Sleaford Town on Wednesday (7.45pm), will have Declan Rogers in their squad again.
