Boss admits that it’s time Spalding United started collecting points on the road

Chris Rawlinson doesn’t feel his Spalding United side should be considered overwhelming favourites for Saturday’s trip to basement boys Romulus (3pm).

The Tulips make the trip to Coles Lane in tenth place in Evo-Stik NPL First Division South, but are just one point behind third-placed Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Their Achilles heel has been away form, with just five points collected from six outings so far this season.

Compare that with rock-bottom Romulus, who have bagged eight points from six matches on their 4G surface at their Central Ground base, and Rawlinson feels it’s tough test for his team.

He does, however, admit that it’s time the Tulips began picking up points on the road.

“Their home form is better than our away form,” admitted the Spalding supremo. “So I wouldn’t say that everyone expects us to win.

“They are obviously a lot stronger at home than away, so it’s a challenge.

“We were expected to win last Saturday (3-0 victory over Sheffield FC) and we managed it.

“We now need to start picking up points on the road, so it is a big game for us.

“Playing on 4G shouldn’t be a problem. Some of the players we’ve got should benefit from it actually.”

The Tulips welcome back Gary King, Conor Marshall, Neal Spafford and Lee Beeson to their squad after they missed Tuesday’s Intergro League Cup defeat against Gresley.
