Batting collapse hits Long Sutton’s hopes after impressive spells from Burton and Simpson

Fine bowling performances from Jake Burton and Rob Simpson proved to be in vain for Long Sutton as they collapsed to a 98-run defeat against Bourne 2nd on Saturday.

All looked to be going well for Sutton in the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division clash at Paradise Field after Simpson (4-37) and Burton (4-35) dismissed the visitors for 140 in 40.2 overs to take maximum bowling points.

But Sutton were skittled out for a tame 42 in just 20 overs – thanks largely to 6-20 from all-rounder Tom Bentley.

Having won the toss and put Bourne into bat, Sutton grabbed an early wicket when Steve Skoulding ran out Dan Whadcock (5).

Jon Howard (26) and skipper Bentley (34) helped Bourne recover from the early loss, but Simpson soon removed both of them – with top scorer Bentley clean bowled.

Spin ace Burton then came to the party, dismissing Adam Binns (11), David Greenfield (10), Josh Bentley (0) and Simon Larter (0).

More wickets followed with Simpson returning to snare Ben Woodward for a duck and Shilander Rainault (1).

Richard Stainsby (15) and Felix Cunningham (7) hit four fours between them in a defiant last-wicket stand, before Matt Bull (1-21) snared the former to leave Bourne all out and earn Sutton five bowling points.

However, chasing down that target proved a very tall order for Sutton and they never really looked like getting close to their target.

Jamie Taylor and Dan Oldfield were joint top scorers on nine runs each, while Bull, Jimmy Harrison, Jeremy Smuth and Alex Canham were all out for ducks.

Tom Bentley’s six-fer was the highlight for Bourne, but Simon Larter also chipped in with 3-4 from three overs and Ben Woodward (1-15) got rid of opener Skoulding (4).

Sutton will hope to bounce back at Sleaford 2nd on Saturday (1.30pm).

  • Long Sutton 2nd were bowled out for 57 at SLBL Division Two table-toppers Claypole, with only opener Andrew Wright (12) making double figures.

Andy Shaw took two wickets for Sutton as they tried to defend the impossible, but Claypole got 58-3 in 12 overs.
