Bakers’ wonderful gesture

A group of keen bakers from a Spalding supported living scheme surprised their older neighbours with a delivery of homemade cakes.

The ladies, who all have learning disabilities, wanted to reach out to local residents that might be feeling lonely

Isabelle, Rebecca and Deana, along with support worker Cheryl Ellis, produced the baked goods in the home they share on Winsover Road.

The bakers, aged between 22 and 60, produced a variety of designs, including butterfly cakes and chocolate icing-topped mini sponges.

Sixty cakes were then hand-delivered by Isabelle and Rebecca to neighbours living in retirement bungalows.

Teri Fisher, registered manager at Lincolnshire South Supported Community Living, which is also known as Collyhurst, said: “The ladies wanted to let their older neighbours know that they were thinking about them during difficult times.

“They knew that going to visit wasn’t possible, but hoped that leaving cakes on people’s doorsteps could bring smiles to their faces. A few days later, our bakers then had their own feel-good moment, when a number of thank you cards were pushed through the door.

“I think it’s basic human nature to want to reach out and connect with other people and we are currently having to do this by whatever means we can.”

Rebecca, who both baked and delivered cakes, said: “I was really pleased to be able to give something back to the community.

“I was so proud when I phoned my family to tell them what I had done. It was lovely when we received thank you cards.”
