A big crowd is expected for the first public meeting of a new group set-up to oppose plans for a relief road around Spalding. The Spalding and Pinchbeck Against Relief Road group (SPARR) is also organising two protests against the scheme. The group has been created to establish a united voice against the Western Relief Road proposal. One of the ...

LETTER: Busy footpath is my concern

Much is being made of the new Western Bypass but it seems that (perhaps intentionally) little attempt is being made to talk to the people who are going to be most affected. The Bourne Road fiasco comes to mind. My concern is at the other end. At the junction of Blue Gowt Road and Blue Gowt Lane is the footpath ...

LETTER: Fear CSW will not achieve the results

I would like to comment on the Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative. Whilst I applaud Jan Whitbourn, the co-ordinator, for her efforts to reduce the horrific incidence of speeding through villages in our area I would like to again express my doubts about this scheme. As I have stated in previous correspondence, the fact that those who receive a warning ...

LETTER: Pertinent Brexit facts

Phillip James (VMail, March 21) proposes ignoring Alan Meekings’s ‘ranting’. But far from just ranting, Mr Meekings has brought out numerous pertinent facts that deserve notice in the continuing debate over Brexit. It would be good if facts, rather than assertions and slogans, were made central. Let me try a couple. It is often said or implied by ‘leavers’, that ...

LETTER: Another side to the story

I was pleased to see the article about the waste of council money in the 21 March issue of the Voice. We seem to hear frequently in the local media from Conservative portfolio holders about what a good job they are doing and to be fair, quite often they are. It’s perfectly reasonable that they are given these opportunities to ...

LETTER: Could path be retained?

An open letter to Sir John Hayes: I understand that there are plans to close Blue Gowt Lane in Pinchbeck to make way for the new inner relief road, and I am appalled that this decision seems to have been made “on the quiet” rather like the charade of the Bourne Road crossing point, and no public larger public consultation ...

Veteran’s memories published in book

A 93-year-old South Holland World War Two veteran has become a published author without even knowing. Eric Houldershaw (93), now of Moulton but originally from Gosberton Clough, had no idea his daughter Pat Moore and husband Chris were planning a book of his memories of the conflict. But they, together with Sue Palmer, who transcribed Eric’s 1,600 hand written words, ...

Spalding society’s shop front campaign

A Spalding heritage group has written to central government in a bid to get a planning law changed over the appearance of shop fronts. The Spalding Civic Society wants to ban the use of vinyl inside and outside of shop front windows to block them with images. Under current planning laws, shops are allowed to have the vinyl inside. The ...

Botched pothole fix mystery

A botched attempted pothole fix has led to flooding and homes shaking when lorries go past, neighbours have claimed. Those who have lived for years on Jekil’s Bank in Holbeach St Johns told The Voice they’d never known large vehicles to shake houses until the attempt to cover a pothole was made last month. Residents on both sides of the ...

LETTER: Junction needs to be a roundabout

The recent coroner’s inquest must have been another sad day for the family of the motorcyclist who lost his life last year on the notorious A16 road junction at Crowland. Our condolences go to that family and all of the others who have lost loved ones in a similar circumstance. Sadly, local opinion was also vindicated by the coroner coming ...

LETTER: Here’s hoping Parkwood delivers

The leisure users of Spalding Castle Pool can only hope that the much publicised new service provider Parkwood delivers quickly on their promise to improve facilities. The old SHDC excuse: ‘we have had issues with 1-Life’ will not cut it anymore. On recent visits only two lanes have been available for swimming (due to classes being moved into the main ...

LETTER: I apologise for confusion

Good try Mr Mitchell (The Voice, Feb 28) in following the well tried Brexiteer path of ignoring any debate based upon facts and evidence and deciding ‘not to read’ any further part of my piece of Feb 21, you ‘appear’, (note the word), to resemble the ‘fingers in the ears/closed eyes whilst uttering, can’t hear/can’t see you’ brigade. That is ...
