Ambrose rues bad batting once again as Spalding Town suffer fourth loss on spin

Lindum (216-7) beat Spalding Town (95) by 121 runs

Rueful skipper Rob Ambrose admits that Spalding Town’s batting has let them down so far this season.

The captain was happy to see his bowlers limit hosts Lindum to 216-7 on Saturday, but then saw Town’s reply end with something of a whimper on 95.

It’s now four defeats on the bounce for Ambrose’s promoted side, but he insists that they’ve been in all four of the matches and feels they should have managed at least one win.

It doesn’t get any easier for Spalding, with unbeaten table-toppers Bracebridge Heath the visitors to Spalding Grammar School this Saturday (noon).

But Ambrose insists the team are still in high spirits despite their on-field struggles.

“I thought we did really well with the ball again,” said the captain. “But we just can’t bat at the moment.

“We just don’t look like being able to make more than 200.

“I think it comes down to confidence. We’ve been in all four of our games, but just haven’t got over the line.

“If we’d won just one, I think you’d see a different side out on the field.

“We knew this season would be tough and we expect the odd hammering.

“But you can tell by the table and us picking up bonus points that we’ve not been too far away.

“The lads are all very happy and we’re enjoying our cricket.

“Bracebridge is as hard as it gets in the league and we know we could be looking at five defeats on the spin.

“But we’ll stay positive, there’s a lot of cricket to be played.”

Ambrose put Lindum into bat on Saturday and was happy enough to see them post 216-7. Will Taylor (54) and Euan Pickering (44) were the stand-out performers for the home side, putting on 88 for the fifth wicket.

It was a team effort from the Spalding bowlers, with Jon Miles (2-35), Hafiz Majeed (2-43) and Cameron Roy (2-49) bagging two wickets apiece.

However, their solid showing wasn’t replicated by the batsmen.

Openers Faisal Javed (46) and Josh Newton (13) put on 37 for the first wicket, but once they departed only Ambrose (11) managed to make double figures.

Joe Peatman (4-27) did most of the damage.
